From a distance, Lake Taihu looks lovely, very serene, the picture of Chinese country life and tranquility. And, for awhile you might fool yourself into believing this deception as you stand at a safe distance in one of the recently refurbished pagodas or pavilions or from nearby Xihui Park and gaze down upon the dark and murky water. But this lake, like many others, which remained pure and pristine as mountain snow for thousands of years, has succumbed to the rigors of modern day life. Now polluted, Lake Taihu stands as a tragic reminder of all the beautiful things we lose as we march forward endlessly to a more technologically advanced tomorrow.
If you have visited this spot, please talk about it and describe how you felt seeing the beauty only to find out it is so polluted to use.
