In many Asian countries including China and Japan, it's very popular to travel by bike. The motorized bike craze started in Japan during World War 2 when a local business man added a motor to his bike to make the five mile commute easier. His neighbors were so impressed with this motorized bike, they asked him to create one for their own use. Very soon, he had a thriving business and opened a plant for mass production. Ironically, they recycled bomb metal (called 'Gifts from the Americans') into the machines. The trend to ride motorized bikes spread to other Asian countries. Now it's pretty much common everyplace.
